Behavioral Issues

And some tips on how to correct them

Won't Use Litterbox
  • Try swapping out litter. We prefer non-clay litters like pine or grass seed.

  • Place litterbox where they are having accidents or change location completely. Cats don't like to use the bathroom near their food and water!

  • Try a litter attractant! See our Recommended Products.

Aggression
  • Keep animals and resources separated.

  • Feed on opposite sides of door. This will help them associate the other animals' smell with food, which is a positive association.

  • Reward desired behavior. Praise or toss treats when they have positive interactions.

  • Never let animals fight it out. Have patience and be consistent.

Jumping on Counters
  • Cats like to relax up high, at times. Be sure to provide them with perches and cat trees where they can lounge.

  • Don't keep food out to tempt them.

  • Taping ledges and bar tops can help. Cats tend to hate sticky things!

Scratching Furniture
  • Place a scratching post where they are scratching. We like this one because it's tall and sturdy.

  • Try taping the area. Cats tend to not like sticky things.

  • Spray repellent and make sure you take time to actively play with them.

  • Provide multiple scratching posts and cardboard scratchers throughout your house.

Hiding
  • Your cat could be ill or in pain. Assess situation and call vet, if so.

  • Provide a calm environment for your kitty. They could be experiencing stress or anxiety.

  • Consult with sponsor or vet on how to help your cat combat stress.

Biting
  • This tends to happen when cats are over-stimulated.

  • They could be done with petting or don't like the spot they are being pet.

  • Allow cat to end interaction on their terms.

  • Noise can help distract cats before they become aggressive. Try clapping your hands.

  • Never physically punish your cat.
